The Second Summer Trash Pick Up Is In Danger -

During the May 5th City Council budget review the Environmental Services Department of the City is going to propose cutting the $70,000.00 budgeted for the second summer trash pick up in Mission Beach. This proposed cut would affect every residence and business in Mission Beach with a fly infestation that would probably be worse than what we experienced in the past due to the addition of the new composting cans.

The city of San Diego spent money on a study in 2013 by David Faulkner, forensic entomologist, that made it extremely clear that unless we break up the life cycle of the flies, the fly problem will continue to get worse.  Breaking up the life cycle clearly meant a need for a second trash pick-up.

In addition to the increased infestation around homes, numerous restaurants in the beach area were cited with violations for flies prior to the second trash pick-up, and we saw a drastic drop in the number of flies when the extra pick-up was added.

We have new council members that aren't aware of the severity of the problem. So it's imperative that Mission Beach residents and businesses flood the inboxes of every City Council member and the Mayor's Staff requesting that the second trash pick up be retained emphasizing that the second summer trash pick up is not a convenience but necessary due to health and safety concerns that affect every Mission Beach resident, business and the 10,000's of visitors to Mission Beach.
