The San Diego Police Department is looking to deploy 500 “Smart Streetlight” video cameras paired with Automated License Plate Recognition (“ALPR”) technology in public places throughout San Diego. SDPD will use the Smart Streetlights and ALPR technologies to aid in investigations and assist in the apprehension of those who have committed crimes in San Diego.
To implement the new technology, SDPD and all City departments has complied with the City’s new Surveillance Ordinance by presenting the newly seated Privacy Advisory Board and now must go to the City Council with the technology proposal.
SDPD invites community members to share their support for the use of these technologies in San Diego communities by attending or calling into the City Council’s Public Safety Committee meeting on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at 1 p.m. To learn more about the technology and the rigorous steps SDPD has followed to comply with the Surveillance Ordinance, visit www.sandiego.gov/police/technology.
